This is basically being pushed by the need to cushion the owners from the high cost of living in and around urban cities. The second thing is the new trend in diet style to move away from processed food to the new fresh from the farm.
Majority of urban dwellers have also found it profitable to do some farming as a pastime way and also teach their children farming early enough while still enjoying urban life.
One of the fast picking farming in Nairobi in dairy farming around Ruai,Ngong,Ongata Rongai,Kitengela,Garden estate among other near by estate.
The kind of investment that these farmers have done is enormous. I know of a farmer in Garden estate with 45 high valued dairy cattle each valued at approximately Kshs 80,000,high commercial broiler and chicken layers project with separate breeders stock. Livestock Insurance to these animals has provided a risk management option for the death of animals. The cost of insurance is very cheap. It ranges from Kshs 1,500 to 3,000 per animal in case of death but at inception of the cover the animal must be of sound health certified by a veterinary surgeon. APA insurance has a very innovative livestock insurance product. It Indemnify the Insured’s livestock during the period of Insurance which is one year due to death as a result of:- Accidents, Illness and disease of terminal nature. Epidemics. Emergency slaughter on advice of a qualified veterinary surgeon. The farmer can extended to cover to include theft of animals, Transit risks and Calving .The value of animals is on an agreed value basis provided to APA Insurance by farmer. To reduce moral hazard associated with claims new technology has been employed to track the insured animal remotely.
Urban dairy farming holds huge investment for the both working people and non working people as long as they do it in an environment that does not compromise the environment.
